4 tips for car care after your off-roading adventures

The first thing to remember is that you shouldn't delay your car care. The longer you let mud sit on it, the longer it's going to take to clean it off. You should try to wash and detail your ride as soon as you get home to save yourself time, money, and frustration.

Tip #1: Rinse with a pressure washer before you start scrubbing.

Before you actually wash your car, you should rinse it with a pressure washer (or at least a hose on the high setting). You want to ensure that you remove all dirt and on top of that, all the tiny sand particles that you may not be able to see. If you try washing and scrubbing your car with sand particles still on the body, it'll leave swirls and scratches in the paint.

Tip #2: Rinse the undercarriage.

Rinse the undercarriage of your N Charlotte Toyota - after all, it's the part that took the most of the mud, dirt, and sand on. A quick and easy hack is to buy a cheap rotating sprinkler head and attach it to your hose; then slide it under the truck and let it get to work. It'll clean a majority of the mud off for you and cut your car care time way down.

Tip #3: Clean the brakes and suspension components.

You should always thoroughly spray the brakes and suspension components of your vehicle as part of your off-roading car care. Mud or dirt in these parts can impair functionality and cost you money in repairs and service down the road. Be sure to clean everything well.

Tip #4: Apply a coat of quality wax.

Apply a coat of quality wax to your N Charlotte Toyota when you're done. This will help to protect your car paint from moisture and small scratches, as well as make it a lot easier to clean next time you go off-roading.

Toyota of N Charlotte has affordable car care supplies

And make sure you're using the right products for your car. You don't want to resort to dish soap and cheap wax - neither will serve you well in the long run. Instead, shop our Charlotte auto parts store for deals on already-affordable car detailing supplies.

How to spot irregular wear on your car tires

Car care is critical to keep your ride in good shape, and it's your responsibility as the owner to ensure it gets scheduled regularly and as needed. However, it's also prudent to be able to spot any issues that may be arising on your vehicle before they develop into bigger problems, and that's where our Charlotte auto service team is here to help.

6 types of irregular car tire wear you should know about

Your car tires are crucial to performance and safety so knowing when there's an issue with them is important. If they're wearing unevenly, not only does it mean you'll have to replace them more often but it also points to an underlying issues. Here are the 6 main types of irregular car tire wear that you should be able to spot.

1. Feathering: You might not be able to actually see feathering on your car tires, but you'll be able to feel it. It feels like spiky or sharp pieces when you run your hands over the tires. This type of wear is caused by poor wheel alignments, so have our Charlotte auto service techs inspect your ride.

2. Cupping: Cupping looks like small, semi-circle marks on your tires. You'll often find it on trailer tires because it's caused by the tires bouncing on the road. Regardless of which car tires you see these marks on, be sure to have your suspension and shocks checked.

3. Side wear: If you notice the sides of your tires wearing more than the center, it could be caused by underinflation. If the PSI is too low, it'll cause this type of wear. Make sure you reinflate your tires to the right level.

4. Center wear: Conversely, if the center of your car tires wears faster than the sides, your tires are likely inflated too much. This causes the tires to bulge and the center touches the road more than the sides, wearing it down quickly.

5. Sidewall wear: If you have sidewall damage to your car tires, it's likely from brushing curbs or other objects while you're trying to park. This type of wear actually damages your tire's structural integrity and leaves you prone to blowouts, so don't ignore it.

6. Flat spots: Flat spots can be both seen and felt when you drive, and are the result of aggressive braking. If you notice this type of car tire wear, be sure to bring your car to Toyota of N Charlotte ASAP to have them remedied.

Cross these items off your fall auto service checklist this season

Fall weather is upon us, which means it's time for another round of seasonal car care. Toyota of N Charlotte's auto service center is here to help! Explore this quick list of five auto service items you'll want to cross off your car care checklist before the season gets into full swing. And don't forget, you can make ALL of your auto service appointments at Toyota of N Charlotte.

Don't skip these five critical auto service appointments

#1: Check your battery.

Driving all summer long can do a number on your car battery - the heat isn't kind to it. That's why it's important to have it checked as part of your fall auto service prep. Our Charlotte car care techs will inspect it visually to ensure they don't see cracks, rust, leaking, or swelling. They'll also test the voltage to ensure it's got enough life left in it to get you through the season.

#2: Have your tires inspected by the pros.

Before you hit the road this fall, have our Charlotte auto service center check your car tires. You'll want the right amount of tread and for them to be inflated to the proper level (and for them to be in good general condition overall). This way they can handle driving on wet roads and through loose leaves.

#3: Fill all car fluids.

Fill all of your car fluids in preparation for fall. The summer's heat can take a toll on them so it's critical to check and fill fluids like coolant, brake fluid, oil, wiper fluid, and power steering fluid. That will ensure you're ready to take on anything the season sends your way. Our Charlotte auto service techs can check and fill them for you.

#4: Ensure your headlights are in good shape.

Are your headlights, taillights, turn signals, and hazard lights all working properly? Have our auto service techs check them out if not. You'll also want to ensure all of your internal lights inside the cabin are working as they should. Remember, as daylight savings time ends you could find part of your drive time taking place in the dark, so you want ALL of the lights on your car to be in working order.

#5: Make sure your defroster and heater are working.

Make sure your defroster (for visibility) and your heater are working NOW, before you need them! It's better to be prepared for cold weather before it arrives. Test your defroster and heater and if they're not working, bring your car to Toyota of N Charlotte's auto service center for repairs before the cold rolls in.

Let Toyota of N Charlotte help prep your car for the fall

5 tips for upgrading your car audio system

Are you sick of riding around listening to the radio (commercials are beyond annoying, right?)? Do you wish you had access to apps while behind the wheel? In need of navigation? Whatever your technical troubles, the answer could lie in upgrading your car audio system. However, if you're tech- and car-savvy you may not need a professional to do it for you. Toyota of N Charlotte is here with tips on how to take on this project DIY-style, if you've got the confidence. Check it out!

Simple tips for upgrading your car audio system

Tip #1: Before you can upgrade your car audio system, you need to decide which system you're going to upgrade to! Make a list of the qualities you want your new audio system to have and be sure to do research to find the right subwoofer, tweeter, and any other parts you're going to need. And don't forget, our Charlotte auto parts store can help you find anything and everything you might need.

Tip #2: You'll need a new infotainment system when you upgrade your car audio system. This is also known as your head unit. If you drive an older vehicle, you'll definitely want to upgrade this element so you have access to a bigger variety of features (we're talking apps and connectivity). Again, let our Charlotte Toyota parts store guide you to the right one if you're confused as to which is right for you.

Tip #3: Think about getting new speakers to go along with your new car audio system. After all, if you're spending the money on a new system don't you want the best sound to go along with it? Not to mention, you may NEED to upgrade them so they can handle the power of your new system. Get the best sound quality possible and spring for new ones - trust us.

Tip #4: Look for an amplifier. As you upgrade your system, you're going to need more accessories and more power to make it all run smoothly. An amplifier can help you designate channels and run the system as efficiently as possible, so it's totally worth the investment.

Tip #5: A new subwoofer is also a good idea if you want a better sound in terms of bass, and if you want to compartmentalize your sound distribution. This simple addition can really pump things up in terms of audio. However, before you buy a subwoofer ensure your car has the space for it (they can be fairly big) and you may need a designated amp for it to ensure it doesn't drain your car battery. Ask our Charlotte car parts experts to help you pinpoint exactly what you'll need for this audio system component.

How to handle driving in construction zones

Do you feel confident driving in a construction zone? While it may be part of an ordinary drive time experience for some drivers here in Charlotte, driving in these zones requires an adjustment to your typical drive time habits for safety and also so you're staying legal behind the wheel. Toyota of N Charlotte is here with tips to help you quickly adjust to driving in a construction zone - check it out.

Toyota of N Charlotte tips

8 N Charlotte Toyota tips for driving in construction zones

Tip #1: Be ready for delays.

Construction zones can cause delays and slowdowns with lane changes, reduced speed limits, and other interruptions. If you know one is in your route, be sure to allow a bit of extra time to make up for the delays. And don't be tempted to speed or engage in distracted driving to make up the lost time if you do hit a delay - your risk of collision goes way up when you engage in these behaviors.

Tip #2: Slow down.

You should always slow down when you enter a construction zone - this allows you to react more efficiently should you need to suddenly brake or move, and it also keeps the workers safe. Remember, speed limits are typically reduced in construction zones anyway and speeding tickers are almost always doubled if not tripled. Slow down!

Tip #3: Pay attention to road signs.

Pay close attention to any and all road signs in the construction zones. These signs will alert you to things like new speed limits, merges, lane changes, workers, and more.

Tip #4: Watch the flaggers and follow their instructions.

Flaggers are there to help direct traffic and ensure you navigate the construction zone safely. Don't take them for granted - follow their directions and also watch out for them. Driving past them without heeding their instructions puts your safety and theirs in jeopardy.

Tip #5: Use the "take 10" rule to change lanes.

If you need to change lanes in a construction zone, use the "take 10" rule. Signal with your turn signal for three full seconds before you move, and then use the remaining seven seconds to slowly change lanes. This gives drivers around you plenty of time to notice and react to your movements.

Tip #6: Use your best defensive driving abilities.

Construction zones are a great place to put your defensive driving skills into play. Be especially aware of your surroundings and the vehicles around you to ensure you can avoid an accident or collision instead of reacting to it as it's happening.

Tip #7: Don't engage in distracted driving.

Anything can happen when you get behind the wheel and especially in a construction zone. You should be prepared for anything and this means not engaging in distracted driving - instead, keep your hands on the wheel and your eyes on the road so you can devote your full attention to the task at hand.

Tip #8: Don't jump the gun when you get near the end of the zone.

You may be tempted to put your foot on the gas and speed things along as you near the end of the construction zone, but don't - wait until you're well clear of it to resume your normal speed and drive time habits.

Your quick guide to car tire types

Have you ever shopped for car tires before? It can be overwhelming - there are a lot of options out there and tires can be a pricey purchase, so the pressure is on to ensure you get the right set for your vehicle and also for your driving needs. Luckily, Toyota of N Charlotte is here to help. Our service center is stocked with plenty of affordable car tire options and on top of that, we have knowledgeable service techs available to answer any and all of your questions. We sat down with them to come up with a quick guide to the different types of car tires - check it out.

tire guide

What are the five main types of car tires?

1) All season tires: All season tires are just what they sound like - great for all seasons. Mild seasons, though; these tires are intended for climates that don't see harsh winter weather. They can handle wet and dry conditions and light snow, and there are typically two types. Touring tires are quiet and great for handling, while Passenger tires provide a smoother and more comfortable ride and tend to last a bit longer.

2) Summer tires: Summer tires are similar to all season tires but not really suitable for snow - in fact, they're best suited for climates that stay above 45 degrees most of the time. They can handle both wet and dry conditions and have special tread patterns with orbital grooves in them that allow for great handling in dry weather.

3) Winter or snow tires: Winter or snow tires are perfect if you live in an area that sees heavy snow and lots of ice. These tires are made from a special type of rubber that stays pliable and soft even when temps dip below freezing, and they also tend to be more durable than other types of tires. Additionally, they have deep treads and multiple fissures and grooves that help cut through deep snow and give you superior traction.

4) Truck tires: If you drive a truck, you have even more options. Check out these available choices.

  • All-terrain: All-terrain tires are great for versatility - they can handle the open road but also tackle sand, gravel, and light mud.
  • Off-road: Off-road tires, on the other hand, are perfect for tricky terrain like deep mud, heavy snow, and loose sand that might otherwise cause you to get stuck.
  • Highway: Highway tires ensure a comfortable and smooth performance.
  • Performance: Performance tires are great for traveling at high speeds, and they offer exceptional handling capabilities.

5) Performance tires: If you like tires that allow for great cornering and handling as well as driving at high speeds, performance tires are for you. They're wider (to allow more contact with the road) and have shallower treads.

Don't make these 6 common DIY car care mistakes

Are you confident enough in your automotive knowledge to take on DIY car care? Lots of drivers do it, whether they're trying to save money or just like the sense of accomplishment that goes along with caring for your own vehicle and keeping it up and running. However, before you try to tackle auto care DIY style you should check out this list - here are some of the most common DIY car care mistakes our Charlotte auto service experts see on a routine basis.

DIY car care

6 DIY car care mistakes we commonly see

1. Overestimating OR underestimating abilities.

You should never overestimate or get too confident when it comes to car care. It can end up doing irreparable or expensive damage to your vehicle, so start small. If you're not experienced in auto service, you should start out with the basics, like oil changes, tire inflation and inspections, etc. Once you're more comfortable you can move onto bigger projects. Similarly, don't underestimate what you can do! If you want to try DIY car care, you can always ask our Charlotte car maintenance techs any questions you may have.

2. Not having the right tools.

You shouldn't attempt to complete car care without the right tools - again, you can do damage to the vehicle that can cost you big bucks. Before you start a project, find out which tools are necessary to complete it. If you don't have them, decide if it's financially smart to invest in them or if you should just bring your car to Toyota of N Charlotte for the service it needs.

3. Postponing routine car care.

Even if you're DIY-ing your car maintenance, you should never postpone routine auto service or ignore warning lights. Similarly, don't hope that odd sounds or smells will just go away. This can cost you big time and do a lot of damage to your vehicle, so get on an auto maintenance schedule and stick to it.

4. Jacking your car up in the wrong spot.

When you jack your car up to work under it or change a tire, make sure you're doing it in the right spot. You can find this information in your owner's manual. If you jack up a car in the wrong spot, you're not only putting yourself in extreme danger but also running the risk of doing major structural damage to your car's frame.

5. Not using the right fluids for your car.

Before you start DIY car care, find out which fluids your car requires. It likely requires a certain type of motor oil and may require specific coolants, transmission fluids, brake fluids, etc. Check your owner's manual or ask one of our Charlotte auto service techs what your car needs before you pop the hood and get to work.

6. Not labeling parts when you remove them.

If you're new to the DIY car care game, you may want to label your parts when you remove them from the car. They might make sense to you when they're in place, but can look totally different when they're sitting on the driveway. Save yourself the confusion and stress and label them quickly as you take them out so you know what's what when it's time to put them back in.
