We get our fair share of winter weather here in Charlotte and not only do you need to adjust your driving style and habits, but you also need to adjust how you care for your car. Getting it prepped for winter weather is critical, but keeping it in good shape throughout the season is another thing altogether. Toyota of N Charlotte's auto service center is here with tips to help you handle winter weather like a pro. 

Winter weather: How you should care for your car on a daily basis 

Tip 1: Consider winter car tires. 

If you live in an area that sees some serious winter weather - like snow, ice, or sleet - you may want to consider swapping your all-season or summer tires for winter car tires. These tires are designed specifically for winter. They're made of a special rubber that doesn't get stiff in the cold - instead, it stays pliable to allow for better traction. They also have deeper grooves to funnel slush, water, and snow out of the way and grip the road better. 

Tip 2: Pay attention to the condition of your wipers. 

Your wipers are crucial for keeping your field of vision clear in winter weather so it's important that you take good care of them. Don't use them to clear frost or ice off the glass (this will pretty much shred the rubber) and if they seem like they're in bad condition, replace them ASAP. Additionally, if you're parking your car outside in winter weather, raise your wipers off the glass before you go inside so they don't freeze to the windshield. 

Tip 3: Keep your gas tank at least half full. 

Keep your car's gas tank at least half full during winter weather. You never know when you'll get stuck in traffic due to bad weather or a car accident ahead on the road and if you're not near a gas station, you could run out of fuel during the delay. This means no heat, which is bad news in the cold. Keep some fuel in the tank so you don't run the risk! 

Tip 4: Check your tire pressure (a lot). 

When winter weather is hanging around you should check your tire pressure at least once a week. Why? Because cold air makes your tires lose pressure. Tires that are underinflated don't grip the road as well as they should (which means you're more prone to lose traction and slide on ice and snow) and they also lower your fuel efficiency so you have to spend more money on gas. Additionally, underinflated car tires are more prone to blowouts AND wear out faster. 

Tip 5: Wax your car more than usual. 

Winter weather can really do a number on your car's paint. You should make sure to rinse your car daily if possible to get snow and salt off of it. Try to detail it every few weeks and when you do, apply a coat of quality wax. Why does Toyota not offer an electric car in their lineup?

 

Have you ever looked at Toyota's lineup and wondered why it doesn't include an electric car? You're probably not the only one. With so many other automakers like Tesla, Nissan, Chevy, and more offering all-electric versions of vehicles, you'd think Toyota would be the leader of the pack considering how much research and development they've put into alternative fuel cars. However, that's just not the case and to this day, no electric car option is available.

We don't have a firm answer as to why Toyota isn't jumping into the electric vehicle ring, but we can speculate as to why they're not offering this particular type of alternative fuel vehicle. 

Reason #1: Been there, done that. 

Did you know that Toyota has actually already released an electric car to the general market? Yup - way back in the early 2010s, the Toyota RAV4 EV was an option for drivers who wanted to go green. This futuristic SUV was a collaboration between Tesla and Toyota and while it was ahead of its times, it was nowhere near electric cars today in terms of capabilities. It could only travel 100 miles at a time (before needing to be charged again) and had to travel at low speeds to achieve that range. It wasn't popular for that reason and was retired fairly quickly. 

Reason #2: The infrastructure just isn't there. 

Electric cars have to be charged - you can't just pull up to a gas station and fill up. Unfortunately, most of the country doesn't have the right infrastructure to offer a multitude of charging stations for drivers. This means drivers have to return home to charge or figure out a way to charge their vehicle at school or work if they're running low or have a long distance to drive. It's impractical and can be a deterrent for owning and operating an electric car. 

Reason #3: Hybrids have been vastly improved upon. 

Hybrids were introduced to drivers nearly 20 years ago (thanks again, Toyota) and have been vastly improved upon since then. Today they're incredibly eco-friendly and fuel-efficient, offer exceptional technology and are more affordable than electric cars. This makes them viable options for drivers who want to go green but also be economical.

What to do after a car accident: The steps you should take

 Even if you strive to be exceptionally careful each and every time you get behind the wheel, car accidents still happen. What steps should you take after a car accident? 

#1: Always assess yourself and your passengers first.

#2: Get out of the way.

Tip #5: Use the "take 10" rule to change lanes. 

If you need to change lanes in a construction zone, use the "take 10" rule. Signal with your turn signal for three full seconds before you move, and then use the remaining seven seconds to slowly change lanes. This gives drivers around you plenty of time to notice and react to your movements. 

Tip #6: Use your best defensive driving abilities. 

Construction zones are a great place to put your defensive driving skills into play. Be especially aware of your surroundings and the vehicles around you to ensure you can avoid an accident or collision instead of reacting to it as it's happening.

Why do we never see N Charlotte Toyota convertibles anymore?

 

When was the last time you saw a NEW Toyota convertible - we're talking this decade - out on the road?  

Probably never, right? There's a good reason for it, too. The last year a Toyota convertible was ever produced was way back in 2008, the year that the Toyota Solara convertible was retired from the lineup. Since then, no new Toyotas of this particular submodel have been produced or sold. But why? Toyota of N Charlotte is here with answers. 

Why are Toyota convertibles no longer on the market? 

Convertibles used to be very popular drive time options, and not just Toyota convertibles, either. In fact, the Mazda Miata was the most popular convertible car of all time, selling over a million units after its introduction in 1989. Other makes hopped on board immediately, making convertible submodels like the Toyota Solara. So what happened? Here are the two main reasons you haven't seen and likely won't see a N Charlotte Toyota convertible anytime soon. 

Fuel efficiency

When convertibles were designed, aerodynamics were definitely not factored into the equation (especially not like they are today). Cars like the N Charlotte Toyota Prius were designed around the principles of aerodynamics; their shape is sleek and smooth so they can easily cut through the wind and maintain a constant speed without having to use extra power (or fuel) to do so. Convertibles, on the other hand, actually trap air and create large amounts of drag. This slows them down as they move through the air and in turn you have to use extra fuel to maintain a constant speed. 

Additionally, Toyota convertibles are heavier on the bottom to counteract the fact that they don't have any sort of roof, and this extra weight also burns more fuel, dragging down your fuel efficiency. 

Safety 

Convertible cars are also just inherently unsafe. All makes, even Toyota convertibles, typically had either a soft-top or retractable top. This takes away from the structural integrity of the vehicle, which makes you a lot more likely to be injured in an accident. Additionally, because of the lack of protection on the top of the car, you're extremely vulnerable to injury or worse should debris hit you in an accident or your car were to roll over. If Toyota wanted to put another convertible on the market, they'd basically have to go back to the drawing board to ensure that the car was structurally sound and also incorporated all of the safety features found in today's models.

The indestructible Toyota Hilux

When it comes to our Toyota trucks, cars, SUVs, and minivans, we know that they're durable and long-lasting. There's no finer example of how durable they are, however than the Indestructible Toyota Hilux. This fan-favorited truck was famously featured on Top Gear where Jeremy purchased it from a farm in order to test Toyota's claims that it deserved the title of "indestructible". Jeremy put it through the wringer and believe it or not, it survived - check it out! 

Before they started the experiment, the Top Gear team decided that if the Toyota truck was deemed unable to run or drive after they attempted to "kill" it, then it was not actually indestructible. Over the course of the next several episodes, they could put it through whatever tests they wanted and could make small and simple repairs with minimal tools, but couldn't replace or add any parts to the truck. 

Here are the tests the Top Gear team put this incredible Toyota truck through: 

• They drove it down a flight of stairs
• They crashed it into a tree (yes, on purpose) 
• They drove it into the Bristol Channel (not only is it water, but it's also saltwater) 

You'd think this would be enough to kill it, especially driving it into seawater. However, after each "test" the Toyota truck was able to start up and hit the road again - in the third test, all they had to do was remove the silt from the engine and it started right back up again. 

The Top Gear team decided to ratchet things up after that. They then put the Toyota Hilux through a series of more trying tests, including: 

• Hitting it with a wrecking ball 
• Dropping it from a crane 
• Driving it THROUGH a building 

And finally, setting it on fire. Yup, you heard right. Jeremy Clarkson literally set the Toyota Hilux on fire and even after all of that, while it looked pretty horrible on the outside, it was STILL able to start up and hit the road without any new parts and only small, minor repairs. 

So as it turns out, this Toyota truck was absolutely indestructible. It faced brute force, the elements, and more and still was able to hit the road.

1. Catalytic converter: Your catalytic converter is an essential part of your exhaust system. It converts toxic gases inside the system into less harmful emissions before they're released out into the air. 

2. Fuel pump: Your fuel pump is tasked with moving your fuel from the gas tank to the engine, where it's then ignited and used to get your car up and running. 

3. Oil filter: Your oil filter plays an important role in keeping your engine free of debris. It ensures that no dirt or debris makes it into your engine via the oil, where it can be abrasive and cause damage.

4. Alternator: Your alternator is responsible for giving you the get-up-and-go you need to get your car started - not only does it keep your car's battery charged, but it also runs the ignition and electrical systems in your N Charlotte Toyota. 

5. Air filter: Your air filter plays a role similar to that of your oil filter. It's part of your air intake system and prevents dirt and debris from being pulled into the engine. That's why it's so important to keep clean and replace when necessary.

8. Coolant: Coolant is the fluid that circulates through your engine and absorbs heat to keep it at a comfortable working level. 

9. Spark plug: The spark plugs in your car are used to ignite the fuel and air mixture - this ensures that your car starts and is ready to hit the road. 

10. Radiator: Your radiator is responsible for taking the aforementioned coolant and cooling it down. As the coolant circulates through the engine, it absorbs heat and can no longer effectively cool the engine. It's sent to the radiator, which absorbs the heat from the coolant and sends it back to the engine so it's ready to make another round.

Bad car care habits that can cost you big bucks

#1: Not emptying out your trunk. 

Are you guilty of keeping way too much junk in your trunk? Believe it or not, this bad car care habit can cost you. Extra cargo weight means your car is less fuel-efficient so you'll burn up more gas than you should. You'll also likely wear out your brakes, suspension, and even your engine more quickly as the extra weight puts extra stress on your car. Save yourself money and go minimalist in your trunk, keeping just the bare necessities on deck. 

#2: Putting the bare minimum in the gas tank. 

Are you guilty of putting just a few dollars worth of gas into your tank at once and coasting on near-empty as often as you can? Stop. You may think you're saving money, but you're actually just racking up car care costs. Keeping your fuel pump submerged in gasoline helps it to run cooler and also preserves it so it lasts longer. Plus, the fewer trips you have to take to the gas station, the less gas you use getting there and back. 

#3: Putting the pedal to the metal. 

If you're a fan of putting the pedal to the metal and accelerating quickly, you may want to rethink it! First of all, you're using way more gas than you need to when you do this. Work on accelerating evenly. 

#4: Avoiding using the parking brake. 

Feel like you don't have to use the parking brake unless you're parked on a hill? You may want to reconsider. Using your parking brake actually helps to redistribute your car's weight better so it's not as much strain on your regular brakes. Pull the e-brake when you park to save money on car care down the road. 

#5: Shifting from reverse to drive too quickly. 

When you shit from reverse into drive, you should bring your car to a complete stop and THEN shift into drive. Many people are guilty of shifting into drive immediately while their cars are still rolling, but this can actually damage your car's transmission over time.

Tip #1: Be strategic about your parking spots.
